Robben Island: Marine Studies Learnership Programme 2021

The above mentioned positions are available in the Ferry Operations Department at Robben Island Museum. The purpose is to provide on board training to South African Cadets who wish to pursue a career in Port Operations. The engineering cadets will be expected to ensure the timeous completion of their training record books and ultimately qualify as Chief Engineer Port Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • S3:
    • Attend all required training;
    • To complete the training record books in the prescribed time;
    • Use all opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of all equipment on board the vessels and ship board routine;
    • Obtain the Chief <750kW and/or Chief Port Operations Unlimited qualification in the stipulated time frame.
    • Assist with repair and maintenance tasks as required;
  • S1 – S4:
    • To complete the training record books in the prescribed time;
    • Obtain the Skipper Port Ops and/or Master Port Operations Unlimited qualification in the stipulated time frame.
    • To carry out bridge watch-keeping and report objects and targets to the Master;
    • To complete a steering certificate;
    • Ensure safe access for passengers and that the gangway is properly secured;
    • To count all passengers boarding the vessel and ensure that the vessel is never overloaded;
    • To show all passenger where to seat in the accommodation areas;
    • Ensure safe mooring and unmooring operations;
    • Ensure cargo is safely loaded and properly stowed and lashed for sea. Check that the vessel is ready for sea and report to the Able seamen;
    • Carry out lookout duties during restricted visibility and at night;
    • Make regular rounds during sea passage to ensure passenger comfort and attend to sick passengers;
    • Ensure that all FFE and LSA is in its positions and readily available for use;
    • Ensure that the vessel is clean at all times inside and out;

Experience, Technical skills & Core Competencies:

  • Curriculum Vitae with covering letter;
  • Certified copy of your South African ID;
  • Good health;
  • Copy of your Matric results;
  • Minimum of all S3 subjects in Marine Engineering (preference may be given to candidates who completed the National Diploma: Marine Engineering) with copy of final results to be provided or
  • ND Maritime Studies Deck cadets who successfully completed S1,S2,S3 & S4 with copy of your S1,S2,S3 and S4 results to be provided;
  • Preference will be given to unemployed and people with previous sea going experience.
